3 Housing Concepts

Today we looked at three different residential communities to get you thinking about what kind of community YOU want to design for. Each of these had a different mission, a different relationship between the individual and the collective, and a different philosophy for how to engage the public. Videos linked below.

The Bauhaus in Dessau (1925 by Walter Gropius)

  • Translates to “construction house” or “school of building”

Convent of La Tourette (1960 by Le Corbusier)

  • “Create a silent dwelling for a hundred bodies and a hundred hearts”

WeLive in Manhattan and Crystal City, VA (2016 by WeWork)

  • “Just as WeWork changed the way people work through its philosophy of shared space, services, community and social interaction, WeLive offers a disruptive alternative to the way people live.”
  • Better information and photos on WeLive can be found at Dezeen and WIRED.
